Controllab's 49th Anniversary

A journey driven by innovation, knowledge, and collaboration to strengthen confidence in analytical results

When Quality Builds Confidence

Behind every accurate diagnosis and every product that meets expected quality standards lies essential work: ensuring that analytical results are reliable. That confidence supports decisions that impact healthcare, industry, research, and many other sectors of society.

Founded on July 12, 1977, by Márcio Biasoli in Rio de Janeiro, Controllab was established with the purpose of transforming data into knowledge and strengthening confidence in analytical results.

The company began its activities in the clinical laboratory sector through quality control programs developed by Controllab in an institutional partnership spanning nearly five decades with the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine (SBPC/ML). This long-standing collaboration reflects a shared commitment to promoting quality, safety, and the continuous improvement of laboratory services.

Throughout its history, Controllab became a pioneer in developing innovative control materials and expanded its activities into a wide range of analytical fields, including blood banks, veterinary medicine, water, wastewater, and pharmaceuticals, among others. Today, the company operates in more than 40 countries and offers a portfolio of services encompassing more than 3,500 analytical quality assessment schemes.

A History That Has Evolved Alongside the Industry

Analytical quality advances through the combination of knowledge, technology, and collaboration. As the industry has evolved, Controllab has expanded its activities beyond internal and external quality control programs. Today, its portfolio includes data intelligence solutions for quality specifications, benchmarking indicators, certified reference materials, and other initiatives that support decision-making and strengthen quality management across a wide range of analytical applications.

The company also invests in continuing learning through training programs, technical content, and professional development initiatives for analytical teams. This commitment to knowledge sharing extends to national and international conferences and scientific events through lectures, technical visits, and collaborations among specialists.

“Our work has evolved alongside the needs of analytical laboratories. Today, in addition to assessing the quality of results, we provide technology, information, and tools that support decision-making and strengthen diagnostic confidence across different analytical sectors”, says Vinicius Biasoli, CEO of Controllab.

When Quality Control Makes a Difference

The impact of this work becomes even more evident when rapid and accurate responses are essential. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Controllab became the world’s first accredited provider covering all methodologies for SARS-CoV-2 detection. The company’s expertise was later extended to Mpox, supporting laboratories in assessing the quality of their test results.

More recently, Controllab became the first organization to include Phytobacter diazotrophicus in an external quality assessment exercise. This microorganism can be misidentified as other species, potentially masking a clinically significant pathogen.

In this context, Controllab supported laboratories and manufacturers in evaluating the performance of the analytical systems used for its identification. This initiative helped identify opportunities for improvement, increase confidence in analytical results, and reduce risks associated with microbiological identification.

A Collective Achievement

No organization reaches nearly five decades of history alone. Customers, partners, and employees have all played an essential role in shaping Controllab’s journey. Ongoing collaboration with national and international scientific societies, leading institutions, professional associations, and regulatory bodies has also contributed to the company’s continuous evolution and the development of its solutions.

This network of collaboration has fostered knowledge exchange and driven initiatives that now support thousands of professionals and organizations in achieving increasingly reliable analytical results.

Controllab’s history reflects the value of trusted relationships, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to quality — principles that continue to guide the company’s work.

The Next Chapter

The challenges facing diagnostic medicine and other analytical fields continue to evolve. Laboratories, pharmacies, clinics, and other testing facilities increasingly require safer, faster, and more accurate processes to meet the changing demands of the industry.

With this commitment, Controllab will continue investing in innovation and technology, developing solutions powered by system integration and artificial intelligence to simplify workflows, strengthen process reliability, enhance data security, and support professionals and organizations in the continuous improvement of analytical quality.

Celebrating 49 years is an opportunity to renew this commitment and continue helping professionals and organizations achieve increasingly reliable, high-quality analytical results, supporting decisions that make a meaningful difference to society.
