Verner Willrich Laboratory reveals the value of comparative management of indicators

Laboratório Verner Willrich revela o valor da gestão comparativa de indicadores

The technical director of the organization highlights the positive transformation Metricare has brought to the institution’s results.

How is my laboratory positioned in the market compared to direct competitors? How can I monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of my strategies? How are my financial and resource utilization indicators performing compared to similar organizations?

These are some examples of questions that laboratory managers face, seeking accurate insights to ensure business sustainability. In this context, data management and indicator comparison play a crucial role in the health of companies and marked a turning point in the management of LabVW Laboratory.

With 61 years of history in providing laboratory medicine services in Santa Catarina, the laboratory has served over 700,000 clients in the past five years and conducts approximately 1 million tests annually, delivering results within 24 hours for over 90% of its tests.

Data mnagement and performance indicators

In an exclusive interview with Fernando Berlitz, the manager of indicators and accreditations at Controllab, the company responsible for Metricare, Adriana Helena Sedrez, the technical director of LabVW Laboratory, states that the management of indicators has always been a valued practice at the institution, especially as an accredited laboratory by the PALC program of the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (SBPC/ML). However, some limitations prevented broad monitoring:

Even before the implementation of the PALC standard, we had indicators to monitor our performance. From our PALC accreditation, it became necessary to compare with our peers to set more accurate metrics to our reality. So, we tried to do this with a nearby laboratory, but despite also being PALC accredited, it had some differences, such as not being a hospital service laboratory like Verner. Additionally, we faced resistance to sharing indicator data that was not adequate, she highlights.

According to Adriana, it was in seeking a solution that met the laboratory’s strategic needs, not only to comply with regulatory requirements but also to boost operational efficiency, that LabVW Laboratory turned to Metricare, a data management and indicator platform operated by Controllab.

Metricare drives laboratory growth

LabVW Laboratory actively participates in the Metricare laboratory module. The module includes 400 participating laboratories, covering more than 180 performance indicators in various dimensions and is endorsed by the SBPC/ML. Adriana emphasizes the security Metricare provides for data reporting and how the platform has optimized the laboratory’s routine management:

Metricare began guiding us in critical analysis meetings because we could identify our market position and, from there, address opportunities for improvement. When I join a program where laboratories from all over Brazil participate, where our data is preserved and treated confidentially only for comparison purposes, we feel much safer providing our information, including the most strategic ones, she states.

According to Adriana, by managing data and comparing specific indicators through Metricare, it became possible to implement much more accurate and secure actions, promoting process optimization and reaching new levels related to the institution’s overall performance.

Efficient management in times of crisis

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations faced challenges that tested the adaptability of managers and administrators. The sudden interruption of supply chains and the drastic change in customer behavior were some of the aspects that forced health organizations to rethink their operational and market strategies.

In this scenario of uncertainties, Adriana reveals how crucial it was to rely on Metricare indicators. While competitors reduced their workforce, renegotiated contracts, and even temporarily or permanently suspended operations, data management and indicator comparison allowed LabVW Laboratory to continue on a growth path:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the productivity indicator, for example, was essential in supporting our decision-making. While many of our competitors were closing their doors or reducing their workforce, we realized we were on the opposite path, with increasing productivity, even needing to hire more professionals to meet our demand. The validation of this strategy was only possible because of the comparative analysis of this indicator, she highlights.
